Getting around Santa Catalina Island by bike

Cycling on Santa Catalina Island is also very common for visitors. Bikes are cheaper to rent than golf carts. The rates for renting beach cruise bikes (up to about 6 gears) are $5 an hour with a minimum rental of 1 hour and a $10 deposit. It costs $15 to rent a bike for a day. Mountain bikes are a little more expensive at $10 an hour and about $20 for a day.

There are two main bike rental places on Santa Catalina Island, U-Drive Auto and Bicycles and Brown’s. U-Drive Auto is the better of the two with lower rental rates, more selection, and much friendlier staff. U-Drive not only have bikes to rent, but also golf carts. Brown’s is more expensive, has fewer selection, and has a problem with customers looking at their bikes before renting. U-Drive will make sure you like the bikes before you rent. Brown’s tend to want you to rent first. U-Drive, however, does not accept credit cards, so bring cash or travellers’ checks.
