Fire burning everything on Santa Catalina Island
In 1915, a fire broke out on Santa Catalina
Island in Avalon. It is believed that the first started in
the kitchen of the Metropole Hotel. The fire burned everything
west of Metropole street and brought financial distress to
the Banning brothers. The fire marked another change of
ownership of Santa Catalina Island that changed everything
about Santa Catalina Island.
The era of William Wrigley Jr.
In October of 1919, William Wrigley Jr. of
Chicago acquired a majority interest in the Santa Catalina
Island Company. William Wrigley Jr. 's acquisition of Santa
Catalina Island marked the beginning of the new Santa
Catalina Island that everyone is proud of today.
William Wrigley Jr. and his wife Ada Wrigley
were in love with Santa Catalina Island and devoted
every resource they had to develop Santa Catalina
Island. William Wrigley, Jr. died in 1932, leaving a
legacy for future generations to cherish in Santa Catalina
Island.
