Catalina Islands CA
Assuming you're coming from somewhere in the
Continental US, there are three airports you could land at,
depending on which kind of plane you're on. If you're taking
one of the biggest commercial flights, you'll be landing in
LAX, which is Los Angeles' main airport, right on the beach
near downtown L.A. While landing, be sure to look out over
the sea and look for the big island just to the southwest...
That's where' you're headed next!
From there take a bus, taxi, or even the
subway directly south to Long Beach's Catalina Landing. This
port is the largest of four ports that run multiple trips
every day to ferry you over there. From the front it looks
like an airport itself, with terminals and the whole
works... Just no bothersome luggage check. (You never
actually leave California)
Alternatively, you could land your plane in
Long Beach's LBX international airport, and skip about an
hour of traffic, or if you're in a really small plane, have
the pilot drop you off at the Catalina Island airport, and
skip the Ferry ticket price as well! -Both mainland airports
will have daily Helicopter rides to Avalon as well, which
costs less than you might think. Ask for the rates &
schedule of the "Catalina Flyer" when you arrive, and buy
yourself some time while arriving in style!

Sailing your own boat from anywhere on the
west coast would be very easy to do as well. Simply keep the
mainland in sight until you reach Long Beach, (easily
distinguishable with the gigantic Queen Mary sitting out in
its' harbor) and turn west until you hit the huge island on
the horizon. Docking fees in Avalon harbor are as low as $15
a night, and I suspect even less over by Catalina's other
city, Two Harbors. (Of course it's a long drive from two
harbors into Avalon, and there aren't many cars on the
island!)
Finally, large commercial cruises, such as
the Carnival or Princess cruise line ships, stop by Avalon
daily. If you are a frequent cruise-goer, this is the most
popular way to see the city of Avalon in short bursts,
however you would not likely be staying the night, nor could
you make any of the multi-hour back-country tours.
