Santa Catalina Island (or just Catalina Island for short) is located 22 miles off the Southern California coast. Named after St. Catherine, (which is Santa Catalina in Spanish) Santa Catalina Island in California was founded in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo.
How to get to Santa Catalina Island? Getting to Catalina Island, off the Southern California coast, is actually pretty easy. The most common way to get to Catalina Island is by a Catalina Island Ferry such as the Catalina Express or the Catalina Explorer. The Catalina Island Express runs more frequently than the Catalina Island Explorer but both will get you safely to Catalina Islands. It takes only about one hour on a Santa Catalina Island Ferry to go from Southern California locations, such as Long Beach or San Pedro, to the famous Santa Catalina Island of California.
Santa Catalina Island, California, has two cities called Avalon and Two Harbors. The biggest city of Santa Catalina Island, California, is Avalon, which has about 3,000 residents year round. Two Harbors, the only other city of Catalina Island, California, has only 150 residents. Most visitors of Santa Catalina Island visit Avalon.
There are many Catalina Islands hotels. Almost all of the hotels on Catalina Island can be found on the main strip in Avalon. The main shopping strip on Catalina Islands is less than a mile long and Avalon itself is only about a mile squared in size.
